Martyrs' Shrine / Le Sanctuaire Des Martyrs
This shrine is dedicated to the eight Jesuit missionaries who died while evangelizing the Huron people in the area to Christianity from 1625 to 1650. Visitors can learn about the history of the martyrs - Brébeuf, Lalemant, Daniel, Garnier, Chabanel, Jogues, Goupil and de Lalande - and periodically view religious relics. The site's collection includes photos and records from the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1984, artwork, photos, documents and artifacts. The central shrine is made of white stone and has a Neo-Gothic exterior with a wood-panelled inverted "canoe" ceiling inside. Religious services, processions, pilgrimages, lectures and video presentations take place at the shrine.
