Shell Shocked: The Canadian Soldiers’ Long Road to Recovery
Until March 30, 2023 (12:00 PM - 4:00 PM)

They thought the war was behind them. But for thousands of men who served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force the trauma of the First World War followed them back across the Atlantic. Once home they faced both mental illness borne of their experiences and the prejudice of a nation uninterested in “damaged” men.

Shell Shocked, on loan from the Canadian Centre for the Great War, uses the testimonies of those who were there to explore themes of trauma, treatment, public opinion and the fight for recognition. Shell Shocked will be on display at The Hamilton Military Museum from February 7 through March 30, 2023.
