Uxbridge Historical Centre (Museum and Archives) Exhibition

Their Votes Counted
Until August 26, 2018 (10:00 AM - 4:00 PM)

With the provincial election only weeks away the Uxbridge Historical Centre has a timely new exhibition opening on June 2nd.  Their Votes Counted celebrates a significant milestone in Canadian history - the 100th anniversary of women voting for the first time in a Canadian federal election.

In 1917 a temporary wartime measure extended the vote to all those serving overseas with the Canadian military- including female Nursing Sisters. Due to the difference in time zones Canadian Nursing Sisters were the first women in Canadian history to vote in a federal election.

Canadian women returned from war expecting the same rights in peacetime as they had been granted in wartime. In 1919, the right to vote was extended to all eligible Canadian women 21 years of age or older.

The Canadian Nurses Association partnered with the Victoria County Historical Society to develop this bilingual exhibition. It was made possible through funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The opening reception on June 2nd will coincide with the Annual General Meeting of the Uxbridge-Scott Historical Society (USHS) and will take place at 1pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.
