McMichael Canadian Art Collection Program

Birch Bark Canoe Festival 2015
Until June 21, 2015

The Birch Bark Canoe was the principle means of transportation in Canada, crucial for almost every facet of life including trade, hunting and war. For many, the canoe was, and still is the synthesis of function and style.  Aboriginal groups identify themselves through materials and design, and continue to build birch bark canoes to build relationships with the community, and the environment, particularly water.

Birch Bark Canoe Festival exploring the Aboriginal and Metis history and the teachings of the birch bark canoe is a series of programming offered to schools from May 25 to June 12, 2015 and culminating on the National Aboriginal Day with a celebration offered to the McMichael’s family audience.

During these three weeks, the McMichael will welcome the Great Lakes Canoe Journey’s crew, who will share birch bark canoe teachings, recount their adventurous journey and present the magnificent birch bark canoe that they have personally constructed under the guidance of the Canoe Master Builder.  To accompany this festival, we encourage teachers to book several related art-engagement, and school tour programs.
