THE GREAT WAR IN MOTION
On Sunday, July 15, the Great War Flying Museum presents
“Ground To Sky: The Great War In Motion”” at Brampton-Caledon Airport.
It’s a day filled with World War One living history: airplanes, cavalry, motorbikes and more.
Latest news: After eight years of dedicated volunteer work, the Museum is ready to roll out its full sized replica Fokker D.VII “RK”!
100 years ago, at the end of WWI, the Fokker D.VII was the most feared German aircraft in the skies. One of the Fokker D.VIIs that was handed over to the Allies at the Armistice had a colourful paint job and a Canadian connection. In 1919, “RK”, the plane of Richard Kraut, joined the first squadron of the newly formed Canadian Air Force where it was flown by Canadian heroes such as Billy Bishop and William Barker.
Special guests include the great-grandsons of Richard Kraut who are coming from Europe for the roll-out. They will bring RK’s original medals and photos for a one-time-only display.
Henry Jenkins, the great-grandson of another WWI pilot, John Everard Gurdon, will be attending “Ground To Sky” for the North-American launch of the book “Over And Above”. First published in 1919, the new book adds fascinating context to Gurdon’s vivid account of flying on the Western Front. Meet author Gary Blakely and all three great-grandsons in our hangar.
To complete the atmosphere, re-enactors and artefacts will demonstrate Great War living history.
Ø The Hamilton Signals Corps will attempt the difficult task of sending messages using WWI technology to the Museum’s planes as they fly overhead.
Ø The rare sight of two riders and their horses from the Hamilton Volunteer Cavalry will represent the thousands of horses that served in WWI.
Ø Original WWI motorbikes and flying biplanes complete the picture.
