HOME FIRES FESTIVAL

AlvegoRoot Theatre is pleased to announce an exciting partnership with Fanshawe Pioneer Village in presenting our 2015 Season. In the summer of 2015 AlvegoRoot will present two world premiere productions by local playwrights in Dr. Jones’ Barn at Fanshawe Pioneer Village. The plays will run in repertory from July 14th to July 30th. The season will be part Fanshawe’s Home Fires Festival commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War One in Southwestern Ontario.

“AlvegoRoot and Fanshawe Pioneer Village both share a mandate to examine and shine a light on our local culture. Thus this partnership is perfect to bring great Souwesto theatre to life. The beautiful village provides the perfect spot on to take in live theatre on a beautiful summer evening. The ensemble cannot wait for the summer.”- Adam Corrigan Holowitz.

The Big Lad by Jason Rip
Prejudices explores in new World War One Drama

The first production of AlvegoRoot’s season will be the world premiere of Jason Rip’sTHE BIG LAD. The play examines how the Great War was experienced in a Southwestern Ontario town and the prejudices that emerge in the community. When Danny Gamble cannot join the army because of hearing loss he becomes fixated on ostracizing the local German citizens. Juxtaposed to Danny is the Big Lad, a peaceful boy who looks bigger than his age and becomes an unwilling soldier and hero. “AlvegoRoot has had great success with Jason’s plays (Grey Days Preferable- 2014 and Beard-2012). I firmly believe that this is one of Jason’s finest plays to date. It cuts with an intelligent and feeling eye to the essence of war.”- Adam Corrigan Holowitz

The Angel of Long Point: An Erie Melodrama by Adam Corrigan Holowitz
History serves as a departure point for the adventure comedy

Serving as a tonic for the more somber The Big Lad, will be the comedy THE ANGEL OFLONG POINT. The play is in the style of a melodrama that would have been performed in Ontario just prior to the war. The story takes lose inspiration from the true events of folk hero Abigail Becker who was known for saving sailors from her cabin on Long Point. When harbor worker Hector is prevented from marrying Nella Price by her father, adventure leads to a leaky schooner upon Lake Erie, almost walking the plank and an encounter with Abigail Becker- the Angel of Long Point. “We are taking a inspiring part of our history, adding a stir of melodrama and a dash of stage illusion to get what is promising to be an uproarious night of theatre.”- Adam Corrigan Holowitz.
