Dr. Bimadoshka Pucan, PhD in Anthropology, is an emerging scholar and recent graduate of the University of Western Ontario. She is a band member at Saugeen First Nation and spent her childhood living at Southampton. Dr. Pucan discovered the long-forgotten Wax Cylinder audio collection, recorded in the 1930s, of Robert Thompson, Elizabeth Thompson, and Dr. Edwin Seaborn. The recordings share conversations, songs, and stories of the Anishinaabeg during a time when it was illegal for the Indigenous people to practice their culture. The resilience and determination of the Thompson Family to resist colonization is shared through Dr. Pucan’s research into the lives of Robert and Eliza through their relationships throughout the Saugeen Territory and beyond. Dr. Pucan will broadly discuss how global events effect and strain individual and community relationships at the local level.
