Ryerson Image Centre
The summer ARTbus begins at the Ryerson Image Centre, with Scotiabank Photography Award: Suzy Lake curated by Gaëlle Morel. This exhibition celebrates the career of Canadian artist Suzy Lake, renowned internationally for her work on self-representation, female identity and the aging body. This survey of more than fifty objects, made between 1976 and 2014, brings focus to Lake’s artistic process and methodologies. Including never-before-seen photographs, maquettes and working materials, the exhibition examines this important artist’s career of experimentation and unwavering efforts through the years to push the boundaries of the photographic medium. The exhibition is presented by Scotiabank, organized by the Ryerson Image Centre and a primary exhibition of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival.

Museums of Mississauga
Inside the Anchorage & Bradley House located at Museums of Mississauga, the ARTbus will visit like a conjuring (bringing water back to Bradley), a Featured Exhibition in the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, curated by Stuart Keeler. Erika DeFreitas explores the historic Bradley House (1830) in order to disrupt and challenge the authenticity of Canadian heritage narratives and staged displays of period domestic interiors. like a conjuring (bringing water back to Bradley) invites viewers to gain a deeper understanding of how heritage is staged, and the desire to locate authenticity in its prescribed narratives. Ultimately, the work seeks to dialogue with unspoken aspects of history within the constructs of romantic portrayals dominating the heritage sector, raising questions about who has the power in crafting and telling these stories.

Oakville Galleries
Next, at Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square and Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens, visit the opening of Propped, guest-curated by Gabrielle Moser. The exhibition explores the varied functions and meanings of the prop in contemporary artistic practice, examining how objects help us to make and shape history. The word “prop" suggests an inanimate but moveable object that must be activated by a human subject, one that is neither autonomous, nor a backdrop for human activity, but something in between: a “thing" that gains meaning through the context of its use. Through strategies of staged photography, re-enactment, stand-up comedy and assemblage, the artists included here position props as highly charged objects that mediate people, history, politics, and the landscape. There will be a performance by Oliver Husain at 3:00 pm at Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square.
